On the way home we had to drop low to the ground more than once to avoid bullets, and I put my arm around her, like a lover, to force her down beside me in a ditch, thus proving that all the same I did not wish her to die. In the midst of all these torments for her I was irked to see hope perpetually, admirably rising in her eyes: there was something of that certitude in her that women have of their due, and that they keep to the point of death.

She used to come in from those sordid tasks weighed down by her tall snow boots, and would throw off her wet fur-lined jacket, refusing to eat, or perhaps on the contrary devouring the horrible pancakes which she still persisted in mak ing for us from spoiled flour. On such a diet she grew thin. Her zeal extended to us all, but still her smile was enough to tell me that these services were meant for me alone. She must have been genuinely kind, for she always let pass each occasion for causing me pain.

Cooing like some ail ing old dove, she was attributing our salvation to her prayers in that bedroom fairly plastered with icons and reeking with candle-wax, and the scent of death.
