M. Grimaldi’s discovery that light does not produce sharp shadows—as it should happen if light traveled in straight lines—but the border of the shadows displays a set of fringes alternately bright and dark (diffraction, 1665). From this period also comes the discovery of the birefringence in calcite (E. Bartholin, 1669). Newton himself observed the interference phenomenon of fringes appearing when a plane-convex lens is placed over a glass plate (Newton’s rings), which he called inflection. Actually Newton frequently alternated concepts from the wave model with others from the corpuscular model in order to interpret the optical phenomena.

These fringes are localized at the plane where the divergent rays intersect, and can be observed by focusing them with a telescope (see Complement 2B). If the phase shift of the rays changes, then the position of the fringes also changes. Fizeau compared the position of the fringes for water at rest and flowing water. 6); this delay amounts to N = t/T = c t/ wavelengths (T is the period and is the wavelength). Each wavelength entering the delay means that the fringes will displace a distance equal to that existing between two consecutive interference maxima.

Stokes’ hypothesis corresponds to f = 1 (total dragging), while Fresnel’s partial dragging implies the value f = 1 − n−2 = 0 43 (nwater = 1 33). The displacement of fringes measured by Fizeau was compatible with Fresnel’s dragging coefficient within an error of 15%. 8. HOEK’S EXPERIMENT In 1868, M. Hoek performed an experiment that involved the motion of the Earth relative to the ether at the first order in V/c. 11). However, in this case the closed paths do not decompose into physically equivalent stretches: the rays go through a recipient filled with water, at rest in the laboratory, in a sole stretch of their trips.
